UCSF Neuroscience is committed to fostering a healthy and vibrant environment that reflects the needs of our community of students, postdocs and faculty.
The UCSF Neuroscience Community Building Committee is a group of faculty, postdocs, and graduate students working together to achieve the following goals:
- Develop programs and initiatives to create and foster a healthy and vibrant community for the individuals in our program
- Represent and amplify the voices of community members with concerns about the climate of the program
- Outreach to underprivileged communities
- Serve as liaison between NS students and faculty (i.e. listen to the needs and proposals from current students, and engage faculty to advocate for solutions)
- Serve as a hub for NS community building activities, including surveying the climate of the NS community
- Provide transparency around CBC activities

- GRAD 210: Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Academic Leadership: A unique 10-week service-learning course offered by the Graduate Division Dean’s Office, students and postdocs will develop in-depth knowledge of JEDI principles, build leadership skills, and gain experience designing and implementing a JEDI project.

- UCSF Restorative Justice Center: Community circles are facilitated gatherings with the goal of intentionally building community and relationships between people. They are a part of restorative justice practices borrowed from indigenous cultures meant to provide opportunities for healing, validation, support, and connection. Outreach:
BOBA: Brain outreach Bay area
UCSF students and postdocs provide one-on-one mentorship for a SFSU student who is applying to graduate school (neuroscience and other fields). The focus of the program is to help the SFSU student complete their application personal statement by providing feedback including grammar editing, refining the research experience, and providing feedback on the statement as a whole.
The program began in Fall 2021 with over 40 UCSF mentors paired with SFSU students.
